Professor – Univeristy Of Kwazulu Natal
VERON RAMSURAN
PhD in Genetics | Immunologist | Innovator
A globally recognized leader in genomics, immunogenetics, and precision medicine. His
research combines genetics, immunology, artificial intelligence, and translational science to
better understand infectious diseases, cancer, and human health. Through international
collaborations and pioneering discoveries in HIV, tuberculosis, epigenetics, pharmacogenomics,
and cancer diagnostics,he is developing innovative solutions that advance precision healthcare
and improve patient outcomes across Africa and globally.
Core Research Areas
Human Genomics & Precision Medicine
Prof. Ramsuran’s research focuses on understanding how genetic differences between individuals influence health, disease risk, and treatment outcomes. By studying the human genome, his work helps develop personalized approaches to healthcare, where prevention, diagnosis, and treatment can be tailored to an individual’s unique genetic profile.
HIV Cure and Remission Research
His research group is actively involved in global efforts to achieve long-term HIV remission and ultimately a cure. By studying immune responses, viral reservoirs, and genetic factors associated with viral control, the team aims to identify new strategies that could allow people living with HIV to remain healthy without lifelong treatment.
Infectious Disease Genomics (HIV and Tuberculosis)
A major focus is understanding why some people are more susceptible to infectious diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis (TB) than others. His team investigates how human genetic variation affects infection, disease progression, and treatment response, with the goal of improving prevention strategies and developing more effective therapies.
Immunogenetics and Host–Pathogen Interactions
Prof. Ramsuran studies how the immune system interacts with viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens. His work explores the genetic factors that influence immune responses, helping scientists understand why some individuals naturally control infections better than others. These discoveries contribute to the development of improved vaccines and immune-based therapies.
Cancer Genomics and Liquid Biopsy Development
Focuses on identifying genetic and epigenetic changes that drive cancer development. His team is developing innovative liquid biopsy technologies that detect cancer using DNA fragments circulating in the blood, enabling earlier diagnosis, disease monitoring, and more personalized treatment decisions.
Epigenetics and Gene Regulation
Beyond DNA sequence changes, Prof. Ramsuran investigates epigenetic mechanisms that control how genes are switched on and off. His research examines how environmental factors, infections, and disease processes influence gene activity, providing new insights into disease development and potential therapeutic targets.
Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Drug Therapy
Different people often respond differently to the same medication. Prof. Ramsuran studies how genetic variation affects drug metabolism, effectiveness, and side effects. This research supports the development of safer and more effective treatment strategies, particularly for diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV, and cardiovascular disorders.
Maternal and Child Health Genomics
His research includes studying genetic and molecular factors that contribute to pregnancy-related complications such as preeclampsia, as well as factors influencing infant health and development. The goal is to identify biomarkers and genetic risk factors that can improve early diagnosis and clinical management.
Genomic Technologies and Artificial Intelligence
Prof. Ramsuran is interested in combining advanced genomic technologies with artificial intelligence and big data analytics. By integrating large-scale genetic datasets with machine learning approaches, his team seeks to improve disease prediction, identify new therapeutic targets, and accelerate precision medicine research.
Translational Genomics and Diagnostic Innovation
A key feature of Prof. Ramsuran’s work is translating scientific discoveries into real-world healthcare solutions. His team develops genetic tests, molecular diagnostics, and point-of-care technologies that can be used in clinical settings, particularly in Africa, to improve access to advanced healthcare and precision medicine.
Population Genomics and African Genetic Diversity
Prof. Ramsuran is passionate about ensuring that African populations are represented in genomic research. His studies explore the rich genetic diversity across African populations to better understand disease risk, improve genetic testing, and ensure that medical advances benefit communities that have historically been underrepresented in global research.
Cell and Immunotherapy Development
His research explores innovative immune-based treatments, including γδ T-cell therapies and other advanced immunotherapies for infectious diseases and cancer. These approaches aim to harness the body’s own immune system to fight disease more effectively and provide new treatment options for patients with limited therapeutic alternatives.
